Mercury in Retrograde-Reversed

by: Alisa Schneidman
For so long, and from so many people I have heard “Mercury is going into Retrograde” with a sense of dread and resignation, like prepping for an inevitable shit storm that will hit. I am certainly guilty of feeling that way and saying the same thing. I could feel myself bracing inside for misunderstanding in relationships, (well specific ones anyway) electronics being off, and communication to be disrupted in general. There were parts of me that fought it for a while, angry that I was at the mercy of the movement of this tiny planet with a seemingly volatile orbit-just another thing in my life that was telling me no matter how hard I worked on myself or what I did, it was going to have greater say.
I “tried” to let it go-that’s my cue that the last thing I was doing was letting it go-and it was the confluence of many events outside that made me think why not just let myself feel it all? It was then I remembered watching a documentary about Einstein, Mercury’s Orbit, and the theory of General Relativity. A light bulb went off, and I went to do some research to confirm, and I am pretty amazed at what I discovered. It was all an optical illusion.
I will make the explanation quick and painless. Retrograde means a planet appears to move backwards- there are more in depth explanations and I will include some YouTube videos below (if you like Physics and Astronomy like I do), but Mercury moves faster than Earth and is closer to the Sun, however, there are points during the year that Earth appears to pass Mercury. If you think of it like runners on a track Mercury is on the inside lane and Earth is on the outside lane, at times Earth appears to be ahead of Mercury on the track if you are just looking at them visually, but if you looked at the lap they are on Earth is on lap 73 and Mercury is on lap 80. Hence, we think it’s behind us it just so happens on lap 73 this is where Mercury appears in the sky and that’s kind of special, it’s the point where we catch up and move ahead not behind.
Learning all this last night gave me a fresh perspective and I thought wow-that little planet is getting a bad rep and a lot of power. However, it makes a great metaphor for growth-and that is all-relative.
